UIL WBGT RulesWet Bulb Globe Temperature for Texas Schools
What the new UIL heat policy means for athletes, parents, coaches and marching band. Know the real heat number.
What changed with the UIL heat policy
Beginning August 1, 2026, every UIL member school must use Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) instead of the traditional heat index to decide how outdoor athletic practices and marching band rehearsals run.
UIL first recommended WBGT in 2023. In 2026 the UIL Medical Advisory Committee recommended making it mandatory and the Legislative Council approved it in June, turning guidance into an enforced policy with required readings, required practice changes, and required rapid cooling.

What is wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT)?
Wet bulb globe temperature is one number that describes how hard the heat is working on a body outdoors. The heat index only uses temperature and humidity and assumes shade. WBGT adds sun and wind, which is why it matches what athletes and band members feel on an open field or a hot parking lot.
Air temperature
How hot the air is.
Humidity
Moisture that keeps sweat from evaporating.
Sunlight
Radiant heat on the body, turf, and pavement.
Wind
Air movement that helps the body cool.
UIL WBGT levels and practice limits
Texas is split into two regions with different thresholds. Class 3 covers the hotter, more humid areas, including most of the state. Class 2 starts restrictions a few degrees lower. Your class depends on where your campus is, not your enrollment or conference, so check the UIL WBGT map to confirm.

What the UIL WBGT policy requires
Take a WBGT reading about 15 minutes before any outdoor practice or rehearsal.
Take a new reading every 30 minutes until practice ends.
Keep a written or digital record of every reading.
Change or stop practice based on the WBGT level for the school's region.
Provide unlimited water and real rest breaks with no activity.
Have a cooling zone with cold-water immersion ready when WBGT is 80°F or higher.
The required changes apply to practices, which count from arrival at the practice area until students leave. Games are handled separately, but UIL strongly encourages WBGT monitoring and a cooling zone on game days too.
What the UIL WBGT rules mean for you
Athletes
Expect practices to get shorter or move earlier when WBGT climbs, and pads to come off at higher levels.
Rest breaks are required. Use them to drink and cool down, not to keep working.
Tell a coach right away if you feel dizzy, sick, confused, or unusually tired. Speaking up is how heat illness gets caught early.
Parents
Check the WBGT forecast for your town so you know when practice may be shortened, moved, or canceled.
Make sure your athlete drinks water all day, eats before practice, and sleeps well, especially during the first weeks of the season.
Ask your school where its cooling zone is and who takes the readings. Knowing the plan helps you back it up at home.
Marching band families
Outdoor band rehearsals fall under the same WBGT policy as athletics.
Band often rehearses on asphalt lots in full sun, and WBGT accounts for that sun load in a way the heat index does not.
Booster parents can check the WBGT forecast when planning water, shade tents, and ice for long rehearsals.
Coaches, athletic trainers and athletic directors
A quick WBGT check from your pocket, for any field or away venue in Texas.
Hourly and 14-day WBGT forecasts alongside your on-site instrument.
An easy way for parents and athletes to see the same kind of number you are working from.

Warning signs of heat illness
Anyone at practice should speak up right away if they notice:
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Nausea or vomiting
Chills or goosebumps
Severe headache
Confusion or odd behavior
Stumbling or collapse
When in doubt, cool down and speak up. If an athlete or band member collapses or acts confused in the heat, treat it as possible heat stroke: start cold-water immersion right away and call 911.
Check WBGT with the WBGT app
The free WBGT app for iPhone shows the same kind of number your school uses, for your location or any Texas town you search. It is built for coaches, trainers, and band directors, and simple enough for any parent.
Real-time WBGT for your field or any city
Hourly and 14-day WBGT forecasts to plan practice
Color-coded flag levels in Athlete mode
Humidity, wind, sun, and cloud cover behind every reading
The app estimates WBGT from weather data using the peer-reviewed Liljegren model from Argonne National Laboratory. UIL puts on-site measurement first, so schools should use the app for planning and as a backup alongside an on-site instrument.
UIL WBGT common questions
When did the UIL WBGT rules start?
August 1, 2026, at the start of the 2026-2027 school year, for outdoor athletic practices and marching band at every UIL member school.
What WBGT is too hot for practice in Texas?
Outdoor practice stops at 92.1°F WBGT or higher in Class 3 regions and 89.8°F or higher in Class 2 regions.
How often are WBGT readings taken?
About 15 minutes before outdoor practice, then every 30 minutes during practice, with every reading recorded.
Does this apply to marching band?
Yes. Outdoor band rehearsals follow the same readings, records, and practice changes as athletics.
Do the rules apply to Friday night games?
The required changes apply to practices. For games, UIL strongly encourages WBGT monitoring, adjusted start times, extra cooling breaks, and a cooling zone at 80°F WBGT or higher.
Can parents check WBGT themselves?
Yes. The WBGT app shows real-time and forecast WBGT for any Texas city, so you can see the same kind of number coaches use.
Is WBGT the same as the heat index?
No. The heat index leaves out sun and wind. WBGT includes them, which is why it better matches conditions on an open field.
